Why I won't wont work for a soulless corporate company
8/3/2024The more I look into it, the less and less I want to get a computer science degree. Why would I want to waste 4 years of my life, slaving away at random computer science bullshit, only to get a job where there is zero work-life balance, and my boss makes 30x as much money as me? How dare I not want to be another cog in the corporate machine.
I love coding, but it's less about the passion for coding itself, but more of a passion of how computer programming can allow me to express my creativity.
I'm not quite sure what I'll do after high school. I might take a gap year to see if my indie games take off. If I were to go to college, it would be for an art degree. I would much rather learn about art, animation, and music instead of slaving away at useless computer science busywork. Another reason I want to get an art degree is to be surrounded by other creatives (and other LGBTQ+ people). The last group of people I want to be associated with are filthy tech bros.
Life is so much more than working for a depressing corporate office job. It shouldn't have to be a risk people to want to do what they enjoy, but it's a risk that I am willing to make, for the sake of my own happiness.
I was talking to my parents about this today. All I told them was that I was thinking about maybe getting an art degree instead of a computer science degree in order to get the skills I need to become a successful game developer and artist on my own. My dad said he'd support me, but he also said, "I just hope you don't end up turning into a conservative hater," (Little does he know, LMAO). My mom seemed a little judgemental, but still supportive.
Life is too short to do something you hate. Be the truest you that you can be, and do what makes you happy. Follow your passions no matter what, and try not to let capitalism get in the way of that too much.
